Thursday, Twin Cities.
Two big trips this week, both nonstop from MSP, both far below what these routes usually cost. Checked Wednesday afternoon.
🇯🇵 MSP → Tokyo (HND) — $905 round-trip
Sun Dec 6 – Tue Dec 15 · Delta, nonstop · 12 hrs 55 min
Nonstop to Tokyo for under $1,000.
Google's data says this route usually runs $980 to $2,400, and puts this fare $592 below what it normally costs for these dates. It's the Delta nonstop into Haneda — the airport that's 30 minutes from central Tokyo, not the one that's 90.
Here's the part that makes it unusual: the cheapest one-stop alternative on the same dates is $918 and takes 19 and a half hours. The nonstop is both cheaper and six and a half hours shorter.
Early December in Tokyo is a great window: autumn leaves are still hanging on in the parks, the winter illuminations are going up, it's crisp but mild, and it's before the holiday travel crush.
Book by: This week. Sub-$1,000 nonstops to Japan don't sit around.
🇮🇸 MSP → Reykjavik (KEF) — $616 round-trip
Sat Mar 6 – Fri Mar 12 · Icelandair, nonstop · 6 hrs 10 min
Last week we sent you Iceland in December. This is the other end of winter.
Google puts the usual range for March at $870 to $1,750, and this fare $574 below normal. The same $617 price was showing for the following two March weeks too, so there's some flexibility on dates.
March is arguably the better Iceland trip: the days are back to 11–12 hours of light, it's still northern lights season, and the roads to the waterfalls and glacier lagoons are easier than in deep winter.
Same Icelandair bonus as always: you can stop over in Iceland for up to seven days on the way to somewhere else in Europe at no extra fare.
Book by: This week.
Passed on this week: Dublin at $550 — Google actually rates that one high for February, and the nonstop is $771.
Back Tuesday with weekend escapes.
If you book Tokyo, reply and tell us. We'll want a full report.
