Welcome to MSP Departure.
The premise is simple. Most flight-deal newsletters send the same deals to readers in fifty cities, so you scroll past Boston-to-Lisbon and LAX-to-Tokyo and find nothing you can use. This one only tracks fares leaving Minneapolis–St. Paul. Twice a week, a handful of fares worth knowing about, with a straight read on whether each one is actually a deal.
Two things drove this first issue. Europe is unusually cheap right now — Rome, Reykjavik, and Mexico City are all sitting $100–260 below their usual fares at the same time, which doesn't happen often. And the booking window for Thanksgiving and Christmas is closing: those flights are 10 and 14 weeks out, which is exactly the sweet spot, and Google's own price model is now flagging "book now" on domestic routes.
🇮🇹 MSP → Rome (FCO) — $635 round-trip
Late Nov – early Dec · 1 stop · Cheapest we've seen this year
Google's price model has this at $210 below the usual fare for the route. That's not a rounding error; that's the difference between "maybe next year" and booking tonight. The $635 fare is a one-stop; the Icelandair routing through Reykjavik runs $677 and gives you the option of a free stopover in Iceland on the way.
Rome the week after Thanksgiving is the move: crowds gone, 55°F, and the Christmas lights start going up around Piazza Navona the first week of December.
Book by: This weekend. Sub-$700 to Italy from MSP doesn't survive a full week.
🇲🇽 MSP → Mexico City (MEX) — $347 round-trip
Mid-November · Frontier / Volaris, 1 stop via Denver · Delta nonstop $857
Google flags this one too: $101 below usual. The catch is what it always is on this route — the cheap fare is a budget carrier with a Denver connection, and the Delta nonstop is $857 for the same dates. If you travel personal-item-only, $347 is a steal. If you need a checked bag, add $60–80 and it's still a strong fare.
November is one of the best months in CDMX. Day of the Dead spills into the first week, the weather is 70°F and dry, and the food is the reason to go.
Book by: Within a week. Frontier and Volaris sales on this route typically hold 5–7 days.
🇮🇸 MSP → Reykjavik (KEF) — $399 round-trip
Late October · Icelandair, nonstop · $258 below usual
This is the one to act on. Icelandair's nonstop is at $399 for late October, and Google's price model has it $258 below the usual fare for the route — the biggest gap of anything we're tracking this week. Sub-$400 nonstop to Iceland from MSP is rare; the last time we saw it was a $463 Delta fare that lasted a weekend.
Late October is when Iceland gets good for the price: the summer crowds are gone, the hotels drop, and northern-lights season is properly underway. And because it's Icelandair, this fare doubles as the cheap way to Europe — they let you stop over in Reykjavik for up to 7 days at no extra fare on the way to Amsterdam, Paris, Copenhagen, or Rome.
Book by: This week. Icelandair fares this far below usual tend to reset by the following Monday.
The Thanksgiving and Christmas window
Google Flights is now showing "the cheapest time to book is usually now" on two routes we track:
MSP → Charleston — $299 RT (American, 1 stop) or $448 nonstop on Delta for the second week of November. There's also a $242 Southwest option, but it's a one-stop that turns a 3-hour flight into 5–6; only worth it if the $57 matters more than the afternoon. Google's window: book by October 2. Search →
MSP → Nashville — $208 RT nonstop on Southwest for late October into early November. That's the low end of the route's range, and it's a nonstop at that price, which is the version worth booking. Google's window: book by October 11. Search →
The general rule holds for any domestic holiday trip: 12 to 20 weeks out is the sweet spot, and inside 8 weeks you're paying a premium. Thanksgiving is 11 weeks away. If you already know where you're going, this is the week.
The Sun Country note
One thing worth knowing if you're new to flying out of MSP: Sun Country, the hometown carrier, quietly beats Delta on the leisure routes. A concrete example from this morning — MSP to Los Angeles, nonstop, the second week of December: Sun Country $222, Delta $378. Same route, same dates, same nonstop, $156 apart. They're also cheapest nonstop to New York JFK and Cancún right now.
The catch is real: Sun Country charges for bags and seat selection, so a checked bag closes maybe $60 of that gap. On a personal-item trip it's not close. Their sales run every 4–6 weeks and we'll flag them.
While we're here — Google also surfaced a $171 fare on that LA route this week. It's a Frontier one-stop that takes 21 hours. That's the kind of thing we'll tell you to skip. A fare is only cheap if you'd actually fly it.
That's issue one. Tuesdays will be weekend escapes — domestic, Mexico, the Caribbean. Thursdays will be the bigger trips. When a fare looks right, book it the same day; the good ones don't wait.
